LeBron reflects on Cleveland return: ‘Couldn’t get any worse than 2010’

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The final episode of “More Than an Athlete,” the ESPN+ series chronicling the journey of LeBron James and his four best friends/business partners Rich Paul, Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, goes behind the scenes of James’ first game back in Cleveland with the Los Angeles Lakers this past November.

Fans will no doubt remember the amazing reception James got. But “More Than an Athlete” also conveys how nervous James was based on his previous return to Cleveland with the Miami Heat.

“The only thing I knew, it couldn’t get any worse than Dec. 2, 2010,” James says in the documentary.

James has spoken publicly about the ugliness of his first return in 2010, which was fueled by “The Decision” in which he declared he was leaving the Cavs on live TV. Fans at The Q were more than happy to let James know how mad they were (And that’s putting it mildly).

James’ Lakers return went much better, as he got a standing ovation in celebration of his career in Northeast Ohio, which has included the opening of the I Promise School in Akron after he left.

“For 11 years of my professional career, I knew what I gave to that franchise,” James says. “That night showed me [the fans] appreciated what I gave to that franchise and what I’m still giving to that to the community even though I’m gone.”
